Mini Review: Flotsam & Jetsam (The Forest of Hands and Teeth 0.2)

New York Times bestselling author Carrie Ryan returns to the terrifying world of the Forest of Hands and Teeth with the short story, “Flotsam & Jetsam.” When the zombie outbreak erupts on their ship during their senior cruise, two friends escape in a life raft only to find themselves adrift in an endless ocean with no rescue in sight. What’s worse: one of them is infected.

Note: this 5,000 word short story was originally published in the anthology The Living Dead 2 edited by John Joseph Adams.

For such a short story, Flotsam & Jetsam has a lot of emotion packed into it. I usually find Carrie Ryan’s writing in this series to be quite separated and void of emotions – which works perfectly, since they’re zombies and all – but this felt different. It was interesting to see how somebody would react to a zombie bite; thinking they would die whether they were bitten or not, and losing all hope. This story is about friendship, really, and not wanting to be alone.

This would have been a really good beginning to a full length book, and with what happens at the end, I wish it was!

I read this book as part of the Halloween Read-a-thon!
